can and could: Modal verbs: Ability.
The modal verbs or helping verbs are used before infinitives form of the verb to add a different meaning.
For example you used the modal verbs to say:
1-That someone is able to do something: Ability.
2-That someone is allowed to do something: Posibility.
3- That someone has to do something: Obligations and suggestions.
*The modal verbs are:
can may must shall will | could might should would |
1- We use modals to show if we believe something is certain, possible or impossible:
My keys must be inside my home.
It might rain tomorrow.
That can't be Peter's coat. It's too small.
2- We also use them to do things like talk about ability, ask permission, and make requests and offers:
I can't swim.
May I ask a question?
Could I have some tea, please?
Would you like some help?.
1-ABILITY:
CAN/COULD:
1- Use can and could to say that someone is able to do something.
Examples:
1-She can draw really good pictures.
2- mary can run faster than jessica.
3- Can you ride a bike?
4- Can you help me with my homework?
5- She could already read before she started school.
6- Our teacher said we could go home early.
7- I ran as fast as i could.
8-Jamie could not come to the party because she is ill.
2- You may also use can and could to say that someone is allowed to do something.
Examples:
1- My Mom says you can come to our home for dinner.
2- Dad says i cant walk to school on my own.
3- you cant go in there without a ticket.
4- Mom says I could have ice cream after dinner.
5- The Big sign on the gate said PRIVATE so we couldnt go in.
3-Can and could are also used for asking for information or help, for offering something and for suggesting something.
Examples:
1-Can you tell me if this train goes totopeka ?: asking for information or help.
2-Could you show me where the accident happened ?: asking for information.
3-Could you open that window, please ?: Suggestion.
4- You can borrow my pen, if you like: Suggestion/Offering something.
5- Your sister could come with us, if she wanted to: Offering something/ suggestion.
6- I could lend you my football: Suggestion/Offering something.
7- we can go to the library instead: Offering something/ suggestion.
8-You could ask your dad to help us: Asking for help.
*NOTES:
COULD is the simple past tense form of can.
1- When you put not after can write it as one word: cannot.
Example:
They cannot find their way home.
The contraction of cannot is cant, and the contraction of could not is couldnt.
Examples:
They cant find their way home.
I am full. I cant eat anymore.
Mary couldnt come to the party because she was ill.
1-We use can and can't to talk about someone's skill or general abilities:
She can speak several languages.
He can swim like a fish.
They can't dance very well.
2- We use can and can't to talk about the ability to do something at a specific time in the present or future:
I can see you.
Help! I can't breathe.
We use could and couldn't to talk about the past:
She could speak several languages.
I couldn't see you.
