Telephone  Expressions:


For a B1 level of English proficiency, common telephone expressions include greetings and introductions like:


"Hello, this is Sophie " .


phrases for asking for someone like "Could I speak to Leniah, please?", and common expressions for when someone isn't available, such as "I'm afraid they're in a meeting at the moment" or "Could you call back later?". 


When you need clarification, 

"Could you repeat that, please?" or "I'm afraid I can't hear you very well" are useful phrases and to leave a message, you can say, "Can I leave a message?" or "Could you ask them to call me back?". 


Common B1 Telephone Phrases:


1. Answering the Phone:

* "Hello?" or "Good morning/afternoon/evening".

* "Nestle USA, Lauren speaking".

* "How can I help you?". 

2. Asking for someone:

* "Could I speak to Liam please?".

* "I'd like to speak to Marie ".

* "Is Katie in?". 

3. When someone is unavailable:

* "I'm afraid they're not available at the moment".

* "He/She is out of the office today".

* "Could you call back later?". 

4. Asking for information:

* "Who's calling, please?".

* "Could you spell that, please?". 


5. When you don't understand or can't hear well:

* "Could you repeat that, please?".

* "I'm afraid I can't hear you".

* "Could you speak up a little, please?". 


6. Putting someone on hold or connecting them:

* "Hold the line, please" or "Could you hold on please?".

* "I'll put you through" or "I'll connect you now". 

7. Leaving or taking a message:

* "Can I leave a message?" or "Would you like to leave a message?".

* "Could you ask them to call me back?".

* "Could you tell them that I called?". 


8. Ending the call:


* "Thank you for your help. Have a great day".

*Answering the phone*


- "Hello, this is Marianne "

- "Hi, Alance speaking."

- "Hello, Carnation DR."


*Asking to speak to someone*


- "Can I speak to Annie , please?"

- "Is Elena available?"

- "I'd like to speak to Paula, please."


*Leaving a message*


- "Can I leave a message for Ariana?"

- "Could you tell Samantha that Paola called?"

- "I'd like to leave a message, please."


*Making a phone call*


- "I'm calling about The beach day pass ."

- "I'd like to inquire about Traveling to Europe ."

- "I'm calling to  "book a reservation."


*Responding to a phone call*


- "I'm happy to help you with that."

- "What can I do for you?"

- "How can I assist you?"


*Ending a phone call*


- "Thank you for calling."

- "It was nice talking to you."

- "I'll talk to you later."


*Common phone phrases*


- "Can you please repeat that?"

- "I didn't catch that."

- "Can you hold for a moment?"

- "I'll put you through to Sophie ."

- "The line is busy."


*Dealing with problems*


- "I'm having trouble hearing you."

- "The connection is bad."

- "Can you speak up/louder?"


These expressions should help you navigate everyday phone conversations in English at the B1 intermediate level.
