Use of used to and would. B1- intermediate:

 Used to:

- We use "used to" to talk about past habits or states that are no longer true.

- It's often used to describe things that happened regularly in the past, but don't happen now.

Examples:

- I used to play football every weekend, but now I'm too busy.

- She used to live in New York, but now she's in LA.

- They used to be friends, but they had a big argument.

*Would:

- We use "would" to talk about past habits or repeated actions, often in a more formal or narrative style.

- It's not typically used for states (like living somewhere), but rather for actions.

Examples:

- Every summer, we would go to the beach for a week.

- He would always call me late at night to chat.

- When I was a kid, my parents would take me to the park on Sundays.

*Key differences:*

- "Used to" can describe both actions and states, while "would" is mainly for actions.

- "Would" often sounds more formal or literary, while "used to" is more conversational.

When to use each:

- Use "used to" for past states (e.g., "I used to be shy") or habits (e.g., "I used to go running").

- Use "would" for past repeated actions, especially in storytelling or more formal contexts (e.g., "In my youth, I would often visit my grandparents").

We use would when you are asking someone to do something:

Examples:

1-Would you pass me that book, please?

You can also use would to offer something: Example:

1- Would you like another drink?

2-which cake would you like?

Would contraction: would not or wouldn’t.

Example: Wouldn’t it be better to wait?.

*Used to:

we use this expression to talk about an activity we are accustomed to. In other words is an activity that is normal to you.

2-I’m used to taking a nap at 3:00 pm every Saturday.
