Ing-form: B2-intermediate:

At B2 level, the "-ing" form (gerund/present participle) is used extensively for continuous tenses (e.g., I am working), as subjects/objects (Swimming is fun), after certain verbs (enjoy, avoid, finish), after prepositions (used to, look forward to), and in reduced relative clauses (the man sitting there), requiring fluency in recognizing patterns like "verb + -ing," "-ing" as nouns, and complex constructions like "with + -ing".

Key Uses at B2 Level:

1. Continuous Tenses: Forming present, past, future continuous tenses (e.g., She was cooking dinner).

2. Gerunds (Noun Form):

    * As Subjects: Reading novels helps improve vocabulary.

    * As Objects of Verbs: I enjoy reading.

    * After Prepositions: Thanks for helping.

    * After Certain Expressions: It's no use crying over spilled milk.

3. Verbs Followed by "-ing": Mastering verbs like admit, avoid, consider, dislike, finish, give up, miss, suggest, etc., that require the -ing form (e.g., He admitted stealing).

4. Verbs with Meaning Change: Understanding when remember/forget + -ing (past action) differs from remember/forget + to-infinitive (future task) (e.g., I remember meeting him vs. Remember to lock the door).

5. Verbs + Preposition + -ing: Recognizing patterns like look forward to seeing, be used to getting, object to paying, where "to" is a preposition, not part of an infinitive.

6. Present Participle Clauses (Reduced Clauses): Using -ing for conciseness in relative clauses (e.g., The woman waiting for the bus is my aunt) or with "with" (e.g., With so many options available, He sat there frowning).

How to Practice at B2:

* Focus on Verb Patterns: Create lists of verbs followed by -ing, verbs followed by to-infinitive, and verbs that take both (like like, love, start, begin).

* Identify "to" as a Preposition: Distinguish "to + -ing" (as in used to) from "to + verb" (infinitive).

* Use in Context: Write sentences using these structures in continuous tenses and as nouns to build fluency and recognize active vs. passive meanings.

The -ing form (gerund or present participle) at the B2 level! Let's review.

*Uses of the -ing form:*

1. _Gerund (noun):_ Subject, complement, or object of a sentence.

    - "I love swimming." (object)

    - "Swimming is my favorite sport." (subject)

2. _Present participle (adjective or verb):_ Describes an action in progress.

    - "The running water is cold." (adjective)

    - "I'm writing a letter." (verb, present continuous)

3. _After prepositions:_

    - "I'm interested in learning more."

    - "She's good at speaking languages."

4. _After certain verbs:_

    - enjoy, hate, love, like, dislike, mind, avoid, consider, suggest

    - "I enjoy reading books."

*Common mistakes:*

- Confusing gerunds and infinitives (to + base form)

- Incorrect use of possessive adjectives with gerunds

*Practice Time!* Can you complete the sentences with the correct -ing form?

1. I love _____ (travel) to new places.

2. She's very good at _____ (speak) French.

3. _____ (study) late at night is not good for health.
