Statives Verbs B2- intermediate: 


At B2 level, stative verbs Like: (be, seem,appear, belong), are useful for describing states, emotions, and thoughts.


- *Common stative verbs*: 

Like


Love


Hate


Want


Need


know 


Believe


- *No continuous form*: We don't usually use stative verbs in continuous tenses. 


Say "I love mangú" (not "I'm loving").


- *Exceptions*: Some stative verbs can be action verbs too – "I think" (opinion) vs. "I'm thinking" (action).


Here are some examples:


- I *love* Dominican mangú con los tres golpes.


- She *seems* happy with her arroz con pollo.


- They *belong* to a foodie group that tries new restaurants.


- He *knows* a lot about Arabic cuisine.


- We *prefer* sancocho on weekends.


There are several types:


- *Emotions*: I love/like/hate Italian Food.


- *Thoughts*: I believe/think sancocho's the best.


- *Senses*: This mangú smells/tastes amazing.


- *Possession*: That cookbook belongs to me.


- *States*: She's a great cook.


They represent unchanging situations and are used in simple present or simple past tenses. 


Key Categories and Examples of Stative Verbs:


* Thoughts/Opinions: Agree, believe, doubt, guess, imagine, know, mean, realize, recognize, remember, suppose, think, understand.

* Feelings/Emotions: Dislike, hate, like, love, prefer, want, wish, need, appreciate.

* Senses/Perception: Appear, be, feel, hear, look, see, seem, smell, sound, taste.

* Possession/Measurement: Belong, have (for possession), contain, consist of, cost, include, measure, own, owe, possess, weigh. 

Key Rules and Exceptions:


* No "-ing": Stative verbs are usually not used in progressive/continuous forms. 


* Incorrect: "I am knowing the answer." Correct: "I know the answer".

* Mixed Stative/Dynamic Verbs: Some verbs can be stative or dynamic depending on meaning.

    * Have: "I have a car" (Stative - possession) vs. "I'm having lunch" (Dynamic - eating).

    * 

    * Think: "I think it's true"

    *  (Stative - opinion) vs. "I'm thinking about it" (Dynamic - mental process).

    * 

    * See: "I see you" (Stative perception) vs. "I'm seeing a doctor" (Dynamic - meeting).

    * 

* Common Error: Using "feel" for health often allows continuous: "I'm not feeling well.
