Active and passive voice: B2- intermediate:

 Active and passive voice: B2- intermediate: 👩‍🏫✏️📚

In the active voice, the subject performs the action (e.g., "The dog bit the man"). In the passive voice, the focus shifts to the receiver of the action (e.g., "The man was bitten by the dog"). At the B2 intermediate level, you use the passive to emphasize the action itself, when the "doer" is unknown, or to sound more formal.

1. Basic Structure:

To form the passive voice, use the appropriate tense of the verb "to be" + the past participle (V3) of the main verb. If you want to mention the person or thing doing the action, use the preposition "by".

2. Form by Tense Examples

Here is how verbs change between active and passive across common tenses:

* Present Simple:

    * Active: The mechanic repairs the car.

    * Passive: The car is repaired (by the mechanic).

* Past Simple:

    * Active: Shakespeare wrote the play.

    * Passive: The play was written (by Shakespeare).

* Present Continuous:

    * Active: They are painting the house.

    * Passive: The house is being painted (by them).

* Present Perfect:

    * Active: Someone has stolen my bike.

    * Passive: My bike has been stolen.

* Future Simple (Will)

    * Active: The company will hire a new manager.

    * Passive: A new manager will be hired.

* Modals (can, must, should):

    * Active: You must submit the form.

    * Passive: The form must be submitted.

3. Advanced B2 Features:

At an intermediate level, you will encounter more specialized passive structures:

* Two Objects: Some verbs (like give, send, offer) have a direct and indirect object. You can create passive sentences in two ways:

    * Active: He gave me the letter.

    * Passive (emphasizing the person): I was given the letter.

    * Passive (emphasizing the object): The letter was given to me.

* The "Get" Passive: Often used in informal spoken English to express an action that happens to someone, especially with negative outcomes (e.g., She got promoted, I got mugged).

* Reporting Verbs: Used for formal statements, news, or rumors (e.g., It is believed that..., He is said to be...).
