At the B2 (Upper-Intermediate) level, writing clear paragraphs requires mastering the "Three-Part Structure": a topic sentence that states the main idea, supporting sentences that add details, examples, and arguments, and a concluding sentence that summarizes the point or links it to the next paragraph.
The Standard B2 Paragraph Structure
A well-developed B2 paragraph should be about 40–50 words and consist of 3 to 4 specific sentences:
1. Topic Sentence: Introduce the main idea clearly.
2. Supporting Sentences: Expand on the idea by providing evidence, reasons, or specific examples.
3. Concluding Sentence: Summarize the main point or smoothly transition to the next paragraph.
Essential B2 Linking Words:
To achieve a B2 score, you must avoid stringing short, basic sentences together. Use these transitional phrases to connect your ideas logically:
* For adding information: Furthermore, Moreover, In addition, What is more.
* For giving examples: For instance, Specifically, Such as.
* For showing contrast: However, On the other hand, Nevertheless.
* For showing results/consequence: Therefore, Consequently, As a result.
Common B2 Writing Errors to Avoid:
* Avoid contractions: Write out the full forms (e.g., do not, cannot, it is) to maintain a formal register.
* Avoid overusing simple connectors: Limit the use of basic words like and, but, and so in favor of advanced alternatives.
* Avoid run-on sentences: Use full stops. It is much better to write two shorter, perfectly clear sentences than one long, confusing one.
